XOOM Energy Alberta Updated Electricity Rebate FAQs
What is the rebate for?
On March 7, 2022, the Government of Alberta announced an electricity rebate program in response to rising electricity costs that started in July. This electricity rebate program has been extended until December and $50 rebates will follow in August, September, October, November and December for a total of $300. Exact timing will vary depending on the billing cycle of one’s utility provider.
How long will I get this rebate for?
The electricity rebate program will now offer about $600 million in relief through the rest of 2022, providing eligible Albertans with a monthly $50 bill credit for six consecutive months.
Who is entitled to this rebate?
Eligible consumers for this rebate are those who were enrolled and consumed electricity after December 31st, 2021 (in January, February, and March 2022), and whose electricity use is under 250 MW hours per year. This will provide help to more than 1.9 million families, farms and businesses who experienced high electricity charges.
Where can I find the rebate on my bill?
Look for a separate line item showing the $50 reduction to the distributor fees titled “GOA Utility Commodity Rebate”.
Who is providing this rebate?
On April 29, 2022, the Government of Alberta passed the Utility Commodity Rebate Regulation under the Utility Commodity Rebate Act. This regulation sets out that the Distributors and Direct Providers must implement the rebate program.
Why haven’t I received the rebate?
Only eligible consumers (those who were enrolled and consumed electricity after December 31st, 2021) are entitled to this rebate. If you think you should qualify for the rebate please contact Utilities Consumer Advocate at 310-4822 or https://ucahelps.alberta.ca/
What happens if I am no longer a XOOM Energy customer?
The credit will be provided by your current retailer so it does not matter if you change retailers. If your site is under the annual eligibility threshold and you consumed electricity after December 31, 2021, you should see the credit.
Can I get this rebate in a cheque?
No, under the regulation the credit must show on your utility bill.
